Rangers’ Director of Football Ross Wilson is likely to have a big decision to make over the future of Greg Docherty in the summer transfer window.
What’s the word?
Wilson managed to offload Eros Grezda and Eduardo Herrera on permanent deals in January, while Glenn Middleton, Jamie Murphy and Docherty were all sent out on loan deals.
The latter is a player of promise for the future and his move to Hibernian will give Steven Gerrard and the club’s higher-ups the opportunity to assess his potential at this level.
The 23-year-old made his debut for the club in the fifth round of the Scottish Cup on Sunday and made an instant impact, providing two assists before scoring the fourth and final goal of the game.
And it seems he has already done enough during his transient spell at Hibs to convince senior figures that he is a player they should be looking to tie down long term.
When asked about the prospect of bringing the midfielder to the club on a permanent basis, Jack Ross’ assistant, John Potter, was candid in his response, per Glasgow Evening Times.
“Look, he is a good player.
“We want good players at this club. Obviously he is contracted to Rangers [until summer 2022], we just have to wait and see.
“But if there are good players and guys we can think we can get in we would love to have them.”
Potential talent in the making
Docherty appeared to resurrect his career at Ibrox with an impressive loan spell at Shrewsbury in the 2018/19 season. He registered an impressive 10 goals in 50 games for the club, matching the target he was set by his agent, per The Athletic.
After returning from his spell with a revamped reputation and a Player of the Year award in tow, Gerrard labelled him as a “different player and a different person”, yet he has found himself stuck at the same career cul-de-sac this season having failed to make a single SPFL appearance for the Gers prior to his move away.
His success in League One alludes to his potential to blossom into a fine player at Ibrox but time is running out for him to translate said promise into performances.
And with interest seemingly emerging at Hibs, Wilson may ultimately need to make a decision which takes both footballing and financial factors into consideration.
It will certainly stimulate a greater dilemma than the decision to offload Grezda last month as it’s one which could eventually evoke feelings of regret at the club.
Perhaps Docherty can salvage one last opportunity to prove himself during the final months of the season.
