Chelsea will look to record their first points of the new Premier League season at Stamford Bridge when they host Everton in one of the stand-out fixtures of the weekend on Sunday.
The Blues were beaten 3-2 at home by Burnley on the opening day having finished the game with nine men following the dismissals of Gary Cahill and Cesc Fabregas, but they bounced back with a 2-1 win against Tottenham Hotspur at Wembley last weekend.
Marcos Alonso was the hero as he scored twice to give Antonio Conte’s side a much-needed win against Spurs, and the home faithful will be hoping for more of the same on Sunday.
Meanwhile, Everton have taken four points from their first two games and they will consider themselves unlucky that it isn’t six after they were held to a 1-1 draw by 10-man Manchester City on Monday night, with Raheem Sterling’s goal cancelling out Wayne Rooney’s opener for Ronald Koeman’s men.
As the Premier League is celebrating its 25th anniversary, we thought that we would look back some of the memorable clashes between the two clubs during that era.
Here are three incredible games between Chelsea and Everton from the last 25 years in the Premier League…
Everton 2-3 Chelsea (December 17, 2016)
Chelsea would have been nervous ahead of their trip to Goodison Park with captain John Terry missing because of a back problem, and it proved to be the case as his stand-in Khalid Boulharouz hauled down Victor Anichebe in the penalty area.
Mikel Arteta converted from the penalty spot to give the Toffees a half-time lead, but Michael Ballack equalised for Jose Mourinho’s side with a free-kick before Joseph Yobo looked to have put the Merseyside outfit back in control with a header 20 minutes from time.
However, Chelsea completed a late turnaround as Frank Lampard’s looping effort was followed by a stunning 30-yard volley from Didier Drogba that flew over Tim Howard in the Everton goal to give the visitors a dramatic three points.
Everton 3-6 Chelsea (August 30, 2014)
Chelsea maintained their 100% start to the 2014/15 season as they came out on top in a nine-goal thriller against Everton at Goodison Park at the end of August.
Jose Mourinho’s found themselves 2-0 up after just three minutes following goals from summer signing Diego Costa and Branislav Ivanovic, and things could have been even worse in the eighth minute when Toffees goalkeeper Tim Howard clearly handled the ball outside of his area, but the officials didn’t see it.
The hosts then reduced the deficit on the stroke of half-time when Kevin Mirallas found the net, but Chelsea restored their two-goal advantage in the 67th minute when Eden Hazard’s shot deflected into the goal off of Seamus Coleman.
That was the start of an incredible spell that saw five goals scored in just 10 minutes, with Steven Naismith instantly replying for Everton, before Nemanja Matic once again restored the two-goal advantage.
Samuel Eto’o once again gave Roberto Martinez’s side hope before Ramires finally put the result beyond doubt 13 minutes from time in what was an incredible Premier League clash.
Chelsea 3-3 Everton (January 16, 2016)
When Chelsea hosted Everton at Stamford Bridge in January 2016, both teams came into the clash suffering disappointing seasons.
Jose Mourinho had been sacked by the Blues in December following the Blues’ poor start to their title defence, while the Toffees were hovering around mid-table and had got used to dropping points from winning positions.
Despite there being no goals in the first-half, the game sprung to life in the second as Everton took the lead when John Terry put through his own net, before a Kevin Mirallas goal seemingly put the visitors in control.
However, two goals in three minutes from Diego Costa and Cesc Fabregas pulled the hosts back into the game.
In an incredible eight minutes of injury-time Ramiro Funes Mori steered home as he looked to have picked up the three points for his side, but John Terry’s controversial 98th minute back-heel gave the hosts a dramatic share of the spoils, although he looked to be a yard offside.
