Former Everton defender David Weir claims Wayne Rooney can be put in the same class as the likes of Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo.
Weir played in the game that launched Wayne Rooney’s career when he came off the bench as a 16-year-old to score the winner in a 2-1 win over Arsenal in 2002.
And now 10 years on from that famous goal, Weir believes Rooney is classed as one of the best players in the world.
Speaking to Sky Sports, he said: “We were playing a top team with top, top players and the stage was set for Wayne to come on and announce himself and he did by scoring that goal in the last minute.
“It has become an iconic goal for the Premier League and an iconic goal for him.”
The Scotsman, who is now a coach at Everton, also praised the way Rooney has dealt with the demands of being a professional footballer in the Premier League and predicts further success for the 26-year-old.
“He is definitely in the same bracket [as Messi and Ronaldo] because of that. The level of play that he has, the longevity of what he has done and how often he does it, year in year out, week in week out.
“That’s very hard to do with the demands that come with playing for a club like Manchester United. It’s very difficult to escape the spot light but he has dealt with that fantastically. He has picked up medal after medal and he will play a big part in a big team performance.”
Wayne Rooney is expected to start for Manchester United in their Champions League group stage match against Braga tonight.
